Picture Taker
By Lisa Asher
Martha Swope set out to be a performer, specifically a dancer, but life led her in a different direction. “Photography turned out to be much more long-lasting and rewarding, I think because I touched the theater world, the ballet world, the dance world, the modern world,” says the 1951 alumna.
And from all of those “worlds,” Swope brought back a lot of images—more than 1.5 million of them, depicting every major American theater and dance production from the last half of the twentieth century.
The winter Baylor Line features ten of those iconic photos, and in this web extra, we present fourteen more. It’s frankly just a drop in the bucket, but it will give you an idea of the scope, variety, and artistry of Martha Swopes’s life work.
