Where Are They Now: Arthur SmithBy Brice Cherry
When
Arthur Smith thinks back on his college days at Baylor, it always
prompts good feelings. Smith, who grew up in Refugio, was a standout
110-meter hurdler for the Bears and qualified for the NCAA outdoor
championships in that event in 1990.
"I look back with a smile on my face,” Smith said. “I have fond memories of my time at Baylor."
Today, Smith, who ran track under Clyde Hart at Baylor from 1988 to
1992, is trying to put smiles on the faces of children all over
Oklahoma.
After adopting two children, Smith felt a calling to work with the
foster care system. So four years ago, he went to work for One Church,
One Child in Oklahoma City as a recruiter of foster and adoptive
parents for children on welfare.
"I was working in truancy at the time, but God told me it was time
to move on," Smith said. "I didn't know where I was going, but God told
me to just trust him."
Smith, who grew up with eight brothers and sisters, appreciates the
value of family and finds his work rewarding. And he still feels part
of the Baylor family, too.
"I'm almost forty, so there's no running track now," Smith said,
laughing. "But that brotherhood with my former teammates will always be
there."
