BAA and Brock Give ScholarshipBy Meg Cullar
The Bobby R. and Paula Coody Brock Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by the Baylor Alumni Association
on behalf of Bobby R. '56 and the late Paula Coody Brock '66 of Killeen.
Brock told the Baylor Line
that he wanted to give back to Baylor because the school had given so
much to him. The scholarship is also a way to honor his wife, who, like
Brock, was a longtime school teacher. The yearly scholarship from the
endowment fund will go to a student in Baylor's School of Education.
At a dinner earlier this year, Brock met the recipient of the first
scholarship from the new fund--McGregor senior Elmer Avellandea
(pictured with Brock), who is majoring in physical education.
Brock said he particularly enjoys meeting scholarship recipients.
"Since Paula passed away in 2002, I have also given two scholarships
yearly to graduates of Killeen High School, and it just thrills me when
one of them goes to Baylor," he said. "A few years ago, one of them
told me, 'The reason I'm going to Baylor is because of Mrs. Brock.' She
was such a good teacher, and this young lady wanted to follow in her
footsteps."
Both Bobby and Paula Brock earned master's degrees in educational
administration from Tarleton State University in 1961. Bobby taught for
a combined total of forty-one years in elementary and high school.
Paula taught for thirty-five years, with twenty-five of them at Killeen
High School.
