Wariner Mines Heavy Medals
Former Baylor all-American Jeremy Wariner added to his growing jewelry collection with a pair of medals from the Olympic Games in Beijing, China. Wariner, the 2004 gold medalist and two-time world champion in the 400 meters, captured silver in Beijing in that race, running 44.74 to finish second to U.S. teammate LaShawn Merritt, who came in at 43.75.

Wariner also anchored the U.S. to a runaway gold medal in the 1,600-meter relay in Beijing. Reggie Witherspoon, another ex-Baylor all-American, competed in the prelims of that race and, as a result, received his first career gold medal.

Lady Bears Venture North
The season hasn't even begun, yet Kim Mulkey's Lady Bears already have a pair of wins under their belts. Mulkey's team made a rare off-season trip from August 30-31 to Vancouver, British Columbia, to play a pair of exhibition games and do a bit of sightseeing before practice begins in October. Baylor looked strong in both victories over their Canadian opponents--defeating Simon Fraser, 86-67, and rolling over the University of British Columbia, 101-44.

Mulkey said the trip was invaluable from the standpoint of allowing Baylor's seven new players to get their feet wet before the real season arrives. "We got to experience another country and see some gorgeous scenery, and we were able to get an idea of what our newcomers can do," she said.

Pawelek on Short List
Baylor junior middle linebacker Joe Pawelek was among sixty-six players named to the 2008 Butkus Award Watch List. The Butkus Award honors the top linebacker in college football each season. Pawelek was an all-Big 12 choice in 2007 after collecting ninety-nine tackles, including eight for losses. In 2006, Pawelek made the freshman All-America team after making eighty-six tackles and clinching a triple-overtime win over Colorado with an interception in the end zone.

"I couldn't be more excited for Joe," said Baylor defensive coordinator Brian Norwood. "He's a team player with a high football IQ."
