Insider EditionJerry Hill follows well-worn path from Trib to BU
By John Werner
After fifteen years as editor of the Baylor Bear Insider, legendary sports writer Dave Campbell '50 went into retirement this spring, and the Bear Foundation hired longtime Waco Tribune-Herald
staffer Jerry Hill (pictured with Campbell). Instead of continuing the
tabloid publication, the Bear Foundation went to a new online format
for members and is also producing a magazine six to eight times a year
exclusively for members.
Hill, longtime Bears beat writer, joined Baylor after he served twenty-five years on the sports staff of the Tribune-Herald.
Hill had also been writing sports stories for the Baylor Line
since 1991. In his new capacity, Hill will write about all Baylor
sports throughout the year and will send daily e-mail stories to Bear
Foundation members.
"We wanted to have immediate communication with our donors," said Nick
Joos, Baylor associate athletic director for external affairs. "We'll
be able to use Jerry's talents to give them daily reports. He has a lot
of experience and is familiar with the history of the Baylor athletic
programs. Dave Campbell is a walking encyclopedia of Baylor knowledge,
and Jerry will continue the custom."
Campbell began publishing the Baylor Bear Insider in 1993 after serving forty years as sports editor of the Tribune-Herald. Campbell is widely known as the founder of Texas Football Magazine,
regarded as the bible of Texas preseason magazines. Campbell said he
hadn't planned on a second career, but accepted when the Bear
Foundation approached him.
"I met with them, and they told me they had a great need to get
information about Baylor athletics to people outside of town," Campbell
said. "When I told them that I'd try to find somebody to edit a
publication, they said, 'How about Dave Campbell?'"
Campbell expected to be on the job for five years, but it turned into
fifteen. The publication came out weekly during football season and on
a twice-monthly and monthly basis during other parts of the year.
But last fall, Campbell told Joos that he was considering retiring as
he approached his eighty-third birthday. That's when Joos began
considering a new daily online format with a periodic print
publication.
While Hill said he finds it daunting to follow Campbell, he's excited
about the new opportunity. "It's obviously a challenge to follow Dave,"
Hill said. "But this is a great opportunity to break new ground with
e-mail updates that go directly to the donors."
