Feeding the Multitude: Student View

The question   Why is there such a high poverty rate in Waco ?

Emily Ann Stambaugh

sophomore

"I'm not from Waco, but I know a lot of people here who are unemployed. They're looking for jobs, but it's hard to find them here."

Colleen Frasure
freshman

"I think it's that people don't know how to break out of that bondage, the cycle of poverty that creates crime. And I think that there are more well-off people who are unwilling to reach out and help."

Matthew Hinders
sophomore

"I think that Waco's going to need a catalyst. I don't think it’s just going to take more time or work. It's actually going to take outside spending and outside help to lift Waco out of poverty."

John Murchison
senior

"Baylor does a great job of ministering in general, but I don't think we really realize the deeper problems in the community. We don't volunteer enough, and we don't recognize some of the systemic problems that create poverty."

Devanshu Lalloobhai
sophomore

"I guess people don't care; there's not enough support in this community for service. And obviously the economy is bad."

Whitney Rochelle
junior

"I think it's a generational pattern. I think we need to break that somewhere along the line and give these children education. . . . We need to learn how to equip them through educational programs to get them out of that cycle."
