Line Awards By Todd Copeland
The Baylor Line was
recognized in the awards competition at the recent Council for
Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) District IV conference,
held April 4-8 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
A jury of judges selected the magazine for seven awards. Competition
included publications from other colleges and universities in CASE’s
Southwest District, including five U.S. states—Arkansas, Louisiana, New
Mexico, Oklahoma, and Texas—and Mexico.
Dallas Morning News columnist (and Baylor Alumnus by Choice) Steve Blow’s story “You Are Welcome Here,” which
ran in the spring 2008 issue, won a gold-level Grand Award in the
general feature writing category. The story chronicled the work of
brothers Joel Pulis ’95 and Joshua Pulis ’01 in guiding a Dallas
ministry (the Well Community) that serves those with mental illness.
That story also generated three awards for photography for
freelancer Dan Bryant’s work. The photo collection published with the
story won a silver-level Award of Excellence for black-and-white
photography series. Two individual photographs from that story—“Windows
to the Soul” and “Friends Indeed”—won an Award of Excellence and a
bronze-level Achievement Award, respectively, for candid
black-and-white photography.
Also earning a silver-level Award of Excellence was the Line’s entry in the general writing collection category. The entry included two news stories—student writer Luke Blount’s story “Rumor Has It” from the summer 2008 issue and news editor Meg Cullar’s story “Test Results” from the winter 2009 issue—and the feature story “Degrees of Transparency,” which ran in the summer 2008 issue, by editor Todd Copeland.
In addition, the magazine won an Achievement Award in the illustration category for the “Alumni 150”
portraits in the spring 2008 issue by freelance artist Randy Glass.
Cullar’s story “Test Results” received a pewter-level Special Award in
the general news writing category.
