Where Are They Now: Derwin GrahamBy John Werner
Derwin
Graham left his mark at Baylor when he ran the second leg for the
1,600-meter relay team that took home the 1985 national championship.
And he’s never stopped being a relay man. Now a master sergeant in the
U.S. Army, Graham was honored with the Bronze Star in 2007 after
serving fifteen months in Iraq. A communication specialist, Graham
flawlessly relayed messages between various units in the Army.
“I always wanted to serve my country,” said Graham, who is now
stationed at Fort Hood. “I just feel blessed to live in this country.
There’s nothing like the USA.”
The Bronze Star is awarded to soldiers for bravery, acts of merit,
and meritorious service. Graham has also received many other awards,
including two meritorious service medals, two Army achievement medals,
and three Army commendation medals. Winning medals is nothing new for
Graham since he was one of Baylor’s top 400-meter runners from 1982 to
1986.
Though Graham left Baylor in 1986 without his degree, he’s still
working toward one. He and his wife, master sergeant Sheirice, have two
sons, Derwin Jr. and D’Anthony. Not surprisingly, both his sons are
following in their forty-four-year-old father’s footsteps by running
track at Copperas Cove.
