Surprise MeBy Todd Copeland
Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and essayist Gary Snyder was among the
invited participants in this year's Beall Poetry Festival, held April
3-5 at Baylor.
"One of the conditions of art is surprise. Artists surprise
themselves," he said during a panel discussion held in Roxy Grove Hall.
"Really short poems can be very effective. I was asking myself the
other day if even haiku are too long." Asked if one needed to have a
dramatic life to be a poet, Snyder answered, "The material of our
mature life is of such a richness that it will supply everything you
need for your art." |
