Griffin honored in Big 12
Baylor freshman quarterback Robert Griffin was named the Big 12's
Offensive Freshman of the Year on the conference coaches' all-Big 12
team. The Associated Press selected Griffin, a former all-state
standout from Copperas Cove, as the Big 12's offensive newcomer of the
year.
He passed for 2,091 yards and fifteen touchdowns with only three
interceptions, setting an NCAA record for most pass attempts to start a
career without a pick. Griffin also rushed for 843 yards and thirteen
touchdowns, tying Steve Beaird's school record for most rushing TDs in
a season.
Three other Baylor players earned first-team all-Big 12 accolades in
the coaches' poll—senior offensive tackle Jason Smith, junior
linebacker Joe Pawelek, and junior safety Jordan Lake.
Smith, a fifth-year senior from Dallas White, opened his career as a
tight end before shifting to tackle. A member of the Outland Trophy
watch list, he was also a midseason All-American pick by Sports Illustrated.
Pawelek, a junior from Smithson Valley, led the Big 12 with 128 tackles
and led all Bowl Subdivision linebackers with six interceptions. He
also notched seven pass breakups, five quarterback hurries, and two
fumble recoveries.
Lake, a hard-hitting junior from Houston Memorial, finished second on
the Bears with ninety-seven tackles and chipped in three interceptions,
two forced fumbles, and seven broken-up passes.
WOMEN'S BASKETBALL
Lady Bears tops in recruiting
Baylor women’s basketball coach Kim Mulkey hooked the biggest bunch of
fish she'd ever landed in recruiting, signing both the nation’s
top-ranked player and the consensus top-ranked recruiting class,
according to USA Today.
The most prized jewel of the class was six-foot-eight center Brittney
Griner of Aldine (Texas) Nimitz, a slam-dunking savant who set a
national record with twenty-five blocked shots in her senior season
debut.
Baylor also added six-foot-two forward Mariah Chandler of Atlanta;
five-eleven guard Kimetria "Nae-Nae" Hayden of Dallas Lincoln; six-foot
guard Jordan Madden of Lepanto, Arkansas; and six-foot guard Shanay
Washington of Del Valle.
USA Today compiled the rankings of several top recruiting services to determine Baylor's number-one status.
