Test Results: Student View

The question: Was it okay for Baylor to offer incoming freshmen money to retake the SAT?

John Carmack, senior

"It seems like an attempt to falsely improve ourselves. We
didn’t attract brighter students--we just tried to make them seem brighter on paper."

Jordan Franken, freshman

"I did think it was okay. It helped encourage students who didn't do well the first time to try again. I didn't take it again because my scores were good enough, but I know people who did, and it helped them dramatically."

Abel Tamrat, freshman

"I think it was a bad idea, because it's abusing what the SAT was made for--an entrance exam. They were taking people who already got into Baylor and trying to raise their SAT score so the average at Baylor would be higher."

Lofi Masaniai, senior

"I feel like the only reason this occurred is because Baylor wants to have a reputation of being at the top academically and working towards the goal of being an Ivy League school. Everything's going towards the 2012 plan, and I don't see the point in it."

Andy Suddeth, senior

"I'd say it was a tad unethical on Baylor's part. But I think that at times the ethical choice of a matter can be compromised to better the institution."

Jonathan Pilgrim, junior

"I think it's good and bad. Good for the students because we're poor. At the same time, it's kind of bad for Baylor, because they are trying too hard to get their rankings up. It's like paying your players in sports."

Amanda Walden, junior

"I just think that it's wrong for Baylor to pay freshmen to retake the SAT because it just doesn't sound right or ethical. And I don't think $300 could make me sit through that test again. They'd have to up the ante."
