History Lesson
By Judy Henderson Prather

The annual Parchman Endowed Lectures at Truett Seminary on October 14-16 was given by one of the leading spokespersons for Baptist history in our time.

Dr. Bill J. Leonard, dean of the Divinity School at Wake Forest University as well as a professor and scholar of church history, presented the three morning lectures.

"We owe a great debt to those sixteenth and seventeenth century dissenters who spoke out because they could not remain silent," Leonard said. "Then and now, we Baptists don't all agree on one tune. You see, it's a matter of conscience, and when you open the door to conscience, it's the nature of Baptist polity to be messy. I love that about Baptists. It's a painful, awful, terrible, wonderful learning experience. But the dynamism, in the end, is worth it."
