Where Are They Now: David Wesley

The former NBA star returns to Baylor and helps out the team
By John Werner

Nobody expected David Wesley to have a fifteen-year NBA career. Undrafted out of Baylor in 1992, the sweet-shooting Wesley got his chance to play for the New Jersey Nets in 1993. The following year, the guard signed a three-year contract with the Boston Celtics.

"When I signed with the Celtics, I thought, 'I'm going to play in the NBA for four years and make a million dollars—Whoa!'" Wesley said.

The Charlotte Hornets were so impressed with Wesley that they signed him to a seven-year contract. He went on to play for the Houston Rockets before ending his career with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 2006-07. An outstanding three-point shooter, Wesley averaged 12.5 points and 4.4 assists in 949 NBA games.

Now, the former Southwest Conference Player of the Year is back at Baylor finishing the final thirty-three hours of his degree in physical education. He wants to get into coaching and is serving as a manager under Scott Drew with the Baylor men's basketball team. He's married and has three young children in Houston, but he commutes on weekdays to Baylor.

"As a guy who's played in the NBA, I think I have the ear of the players here," Wesley said. "I can tell them something from a different perspective."
