For more than twenty years, visitors entering the home of Baylor’s
Air Force ROTC have been greeted by administrative assistant Betty
Moran Mullins '55.
“She
has greeted literally thousands of folks as they walk into the
detachment,” said Col. Dan Leonard, commander of Air force ROTC
Detachment 810. He’s the ninth commander that Mullins has served. “A
lot of people come by just to see Betty,” he noted. “She is near and
dear to us and invaluable to the ROTC.
We come and go with the Air Force, but Betty has been that
continuity that keeps us on track. She has personally helped us
commission 360 new officers into the United States Air Force.”
Mullins retired January 4, and her replacement, whoever it is, will
have a lot to learn. Mullins handled most of the alumni relations for
ROTC and organized the Homecoming gatherings. She also handled much of
the interface with Baylor, including setting up class schedules for the
cadets. When a new commander comes in, she noted, he often needs help
understanding the inner workings of Baylor.
Mullins, on the other hand, has been familiar with Baylor all her
life. She grew up in Waco and met her husband, Norman “Moon” Mullins
’52, as a student. They married after Betty’s junior year, and she
finished “piecemeal,” she said. “I actually consider myself part of the
Class of 1954, even though I got my diploma in 1955.”
Moon coached basketball for several years before entering the
insurance industry. The Mullinses were always involved with Baylor,
especially after moving back to Waco. Moon worked in Baylor development
and for the Bear Foundation from 1981 to 1987. An endowed scholarship
is given in his honor, and each year the family selects an inductee
into the Norman “Moon” Mullins Honor Roll for Distinguished Faculty and
Staff.
Betty is a member of the Baylor Heritage Club and the Baylor Round
Table. She has also been on the steering committee and attended every
meeting of Baylor Fling, an every-other-year event for Baylor women
sponsored by the Baylor Alumni Association. The Mullinses have four
children, all of whom attended Baylor.
