The question: What second language should Americans speak and why?

Robert Hudson
Junior
“We should learn Chinese because half the world speaks it. It’s the
most spoken language in the world. If we spoke Chinese, we could make
easier business deals and get ahead in technology because the world is
becoming more technology-based.”

Andrea Roth
Junior
“I believe that English is the common language, but since America is
such a diverse country, that no language should be discriminated
against and that all languages are important to the success of our
country.”

Racquel Joseph
Junior
“Definitely Spanish. It’s the fastest-growing population in the U.S.
It’s definitely the most practical, and it has a rich culture behind
it. As you enter business and can speak another language, that is
another market. As the Hispanic culture grows, they become more
important to our economy.”

Jonathan Rutledge
Senior
“China is certainly a powerhouse, and communicating in Chinese could
prove a big asset when searching for a job. Students hoping to minister
[there] will be much more successful if they can speak the native
language.”

Colleen Martin
Junior
“I think Americans should learn Arabic. I just think it would be a
useful language. Communication with Arabic-speaking countries is not
seen as important as learning Chinese or Japanese or languages that
will help our economy. The U.S. is involved with Arabic-speaking
nations, and verbal communication is essential.”
