Deon Minor

Deon was born in Paris, Texas, the third of five children born to Robert and Shirley Minor, both of Paris.  He attended Paris High School where he played football, basketball, baseball and ran track.  As a member of the 1988 state champion high school football team, he received all-district honors.  Deon was offered several scholarships to play football; however, his first love was track.  He was the Texas high school boys Division 4A 400 meter champion as a junior and senior.  His senior year, he broke the 400 meter boy’s state and national record at the state track meet in Austin, Texas with a time of 45.5 seconds.

After reviewing several scholarships offers to run track, Deon chose Baylor University in Waco, Texas because of its academic and athletic reputation.  As a Baylor Bear, Deon participated in indoor and outdoor track and field.  He was Baylor’s track and field captain and MVP in 1995.  He received 14 All-American honors and 9 All-Southwest Conference honors.  Deon won 4 NCAA Championships, two-indoor 400 meters championships in 1992 and 1995, indoor 4x400 relay in 1992 and outdoor 4x400 relay in 1995.

Deon graduated from Baylor University in May of 1996.  He received his BA degree in Communications and a minor in Sociology. While at Baylor Deon was a member of the Xi Sigma Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Incorporated, the very first line to cross at Baylor University (Spring ’96).

Deon first represented the United States in 1992 as a member of the U.S. Junior National Outdoor Track and Field Team.  He competed in Seoul, Korea in the Junior World Track and Field Championships.  There he won the 400 meters and anchored the winning 4x400 meter relay.  He has represented the United States at the World Indoor Track and Field Championships in 1997 and 1999.  Both years he was a member of the winning U.S. 4x400 meter relay team.  In 1999, not only did they win the relay, they set a new 4x400 meter indoor World Record.  Deon competed in the 1992, 1996 and 2000 Olympic Trials.

The year 2012 has been great year for Deon, early June Deon was recognized in his hometown of Paris, Texas by the Boys and Girls Club of Paris. Deon was inducted into the Wall of Honor at the Boys and Girls club for his outstanding accomplishments and achievements.

In September 2012, Minor was amongst a group of 5 to receive the first ever Distinguished Graduate Award from his high school (Paris High). This award honors Paris ISD graduates who are nationally or internationally recognized for their career accomplishments, distinguishing themselves as leaders and role models.

In 2010 Deon was selected as the #1 400 meter runner to the UIL All-Century Track & Field Team.
On October 27, 2006 Deon was inducted into Baylor University Athletic Hall of Fame. Prior to that, he was inducted into the Drake Relays Hall Of Fame in April 2006.

In 2000 Deon received the Athletes in Action Jim Ryan Award (Track & Field) in recognition for his outstanding character and leadership on and off the track.

In 1999 Deon along with his world record setting teammates where honored by the United States Olympic Committee as Team of the Year for setting a world record in the indoor 4x400 relay early in March of this year.

Deon currently is working for Ultimate Performance Sport Management, a company owned by 4-Time Olympic Gold Medalist Michael Johnson (Baylor Alum).  Deon began working with Ultimate Performance in 2004 and is head of client management with the company. While working with UPSM, Deon has been responsible for managing careers of Olympians, World Champions, World and National record holders.

Deon is a current member of the Association of Athletics Managers (AAM). The AAM is a group of the world's leading managers in Athletics (Track and Field, Road Running, Marathons, Cross-Country) who represent the majority of the top athletes in the world.
