Externship Program

The Baylor Alumni Association would like to offer every graduate a job. Before you think the organization might be expanding at an alarming rate, read a little further. With a burgeoning externship program, the alumni association has increased its membership base and provided valuable networking opportunities—as well as some extra cash—to willing and able alums at the same time.

"It's a new kind of program, and we're the pioneers out there," said Beth Wooten, who oversees the Externship Program. The program, she explained, employs ten or more graduates, who contact Baylor grads in their own area to become members of the Baylor Alumni Association.

Externs earn commissions on the memberships they sell, but that's not their only benefit. "They have a network of Baylor University alums at their fingertips," said Wooten. "They're also able to establish friendships, business networks, and community contacts in the area in which they live."

The job is ideal for new graduates who haven't yet secured a job, or for people who want some extra money or have some free time on their hands. For as little as five hours a week, externs contact people from a list supplied by the association. Those contacts can be made in one of three ways—phone calls, e-mails, or direct mail pieces—depending on the extern's preference.

"So many people are interested," said Wooten, "and there are so many opportunities with this externship program that we haven't even touched on yet."

Officially recognized as the general alumni organization of Baylor University, the Baylor Alumni Association is an independent legal entity.
