Having a Fling
By Sarah Gadsby
"How can we bring Baylor women back to Baylor?" Jim Cole, past executive director of the Baylor Alumni
Association, asked in 1982. Soon after, with the help of Dorothy Barfield Kronzer
'44, Cole created Fling, an event designed exclusively for women.
April 18-19 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of Fling, the bi-yearly
conference that brings women alumni back to Baylor for two days of
reuniting and renewal. This year's event began Friday night at the
Harrington House faculty center for a Mexican buffet dinner and
entertainment by After Midnight, a band composed of Baylor professors:
Barry Hankins, BA/MA '83, professor of history; Robert Darden '76,
associate professor of journalism; Steve Gardner, professor of
economics; and Lance Grigsby '96, MA '01, academic consultant in
university libraries. One attendee who particularly enjoyed the music
was Chase Meeks, the only male in attendance and the son of Tristen
Mitschke Meeks '00 (pictured with Chase).
Events on Saturday included a tour of the women's basketball
facilities, given by Johnny Derrick, director of women's basketball
operations. Later in the day, speaker and writer Jeanie Ball Miley ’67
did a presentation titled "Your One Life: Wild and Precious," and
Baylor student and music major Keron Jackson gave a concert.
Throughout these events women reunited with their classmates, initiated
new friendships, and reminisced about their time at Baylor, while
keeping up with changes on campus. "Today as the [class] years were
called out, I realized that for the first time I was actually seeing
'The Good Old Baylor Line' of women," said one first-time attendee.
