Alumni Band

By Meredith Amos

Since 1986, the Alumni Band has marched--and twirled--to the beat of the Golden Wave musicians that now carry on their half-time legacy. And for the past decade, their annual performance has taken place during the Homecoming football game.

Though some of these musicians haven't touched their horns or batons in years, they show up by the dozens to relive their time on the field and enjoy the thunderous applause of the fans at Floyd Casey Stadium.

"It's the kind of thing that sends shivers down your spine," said Alumni Band member Cindi Thompson Moore '81, MSEd '94.

At the 2006 Homecoming game, the band was led by five alumni drum majors, as they entered the stadium through the tunnel beside current Golden Wave marchers and stormed the field. About eighty former "BUGWB" members participated, thirty-five of which volunteered for what Moore called "unlimited marching."

"They actually wrote us into the show," she said. "We were included in the Baylor script spell-out." Alumni also have the option of limited marching, sitting in the stands with the band, or just coming for the social aspect to mingle with friends and meet other former marchers. Those who choose to perform practice with the BU Golden Wave Band on Saturday morning before the game and anticipate their debut over a picnic lunch.

Aside from these Homecoming festivities, 2006 Alumni Band president Sara Norris Alleman '80 said the 250-total membership supports the band in practical ways all year long, by preparing meals for away-game performances, helping with the costs of underwriting music, and providing scholarships for band members.

"Our main purpose is to allow former members to fellowship with each other and support the current band in any way we can," Moore said. "Part of the fun of going to events like Homecoming is sharing that time you had in BUGWB with others you may not have known when you were marching. It's a positive experience that we all share and want to help to continue."

Officially recognized as the general alumni organization of Baylor University, the Baylor Alumni Association is an independent legal entity.
