How I spent my Homecoming
By Kaitlyn Salazar

This year, my Homecoming was pretty much devoted solely to Pigskin Revue. As a member of Sing Alliance, this was my second time performing in Pigskin with that group. Last spring, Sing Alliance got 3rd place with our coffee-shop-themed act, “A Latté Love,” at All University Sing (the first time Sing Alliance had ever placed, too!). The characters in our act consisted of students, businesspeople and baristas (I was a student). I was one of the many returning members from the spring to perform the act again in Pigskin.
Since Pigskin is the top eight acts from the previous year’s All University Sing, the atmosphere is more relaxed and not as competitive. Nevertheless, anyone that performs in Pigskin is required to wear makeup as part of their costume (including the guys!). Since I am one of those people that doesn’t wear makeup on a regular basis, this is the most uncomfortable part of Pigskin. Luckily, my roommate
Rachael knows how to put on makeup and she kindly put it on for me.
Sing Alliance meets as a group at least an hour before every performance on the 3rd floor of Speight Parking Garage. During that hour, members would take pictures, help each other put last minute touchups on their costumes and girls would put makeup on the guys. We also did a quick run-through of the show, with the music blasting from someone’s car radio. After that, we would all walk to Waco Hall as a group.
From this point, there is a lot of waiting before we actually perform. First, two random members of Sing Alliance are chosen to get breathalyzed for alcohol. Student Activities is very strict about there being no alcohol during Sing and Pigskin. If one person tests positive on the breathalyzer, the entire group cannot perform. On the first performance on Friday, I
was one of the people chosen to be breathalyzed (my first time in the three years I’ve been part of Sing Alliance). Since Sing Alliance has always been good about not drinking before a performance, many of us consider the breathalyzer to be a badge of honor. The printout from my breathalyzer is hanging up on my refrigerator even now.
After the breathalyzer, the Waco Hall staff let us into Roxy Grove (where a lot of band concerts are held). This is where we do one final run-through before we perform onstage. Sing Alliance also does a “Pump It Up” to get excited about performing for an audience. Once we are (finally) called onstage, everyone grabs any props for our act and we file onto the stage to set up for our act.
Performing for a live audience is probably one of the best feelings I have ever had. The band playing the music loudly, the lights and the cheers from the audience create the biggest adrenaline rush I have ever had. Since Sing Alliance got 3rd place at All University Sing, we got to perform first at each Pigskin performance. This certainly made it easier to rush into the audience when we were done performing and watch the other acts.
Friday night was a lot of fun for me. My parents came up to watch Pigskin that night. My brother was also going to come but he got sick the night before and decided to stay home instead. Rather than trying to sell the extra ticket, I decided to use the ticket myself and sit with my parents and roommate to watch the rest of the show. This ended up working out very nicely since I got to spend time with my parents and sit in the audience in my costume and watch the other acts.
Since Pigskin consists of one show on Thursday, two shows on Friday and another show on Saturday, it can be quite an exhausting weekend (especially on Friday). In the end, however, performing onstage is so much fun. Even though it makes me really tired, I would do it all again in a heartbeat.
