The Abner V. McCall Religious Liberty Award honors individuals with close ties to Baylor who have fought to uphold religious freedom. Like the award's namesake, recipients have demonstrated the courage and dedication to defend and advocate for religious liberty.
As dean of the Baylor Law School from 1948-59, and later as Baylor president for two decades, Abner McCall saw Baylor grow from 6,000 to 10,000 students, while maintaining a distinctly Christian educational mission.
Since 1998, the alumni association has presented the award only four times. First to receive the award was Dr. James M. Dunn, an advocate for religious liberty who headed the Baptist Joint Committee on Public Affairs in Washington, D.C., for 18 years. In 2004, Dr. Edwin Gaustad, a respected religious scholar, was recognized for his many years of teaching and his publications on the history of American religious thought. And in 2005, the late John F. Baugh (pictured above with his daughter, Babs) earned the award for his contributions to Baptist organizations around the state and nation. In 2007, the award was given to U.S. Congressman Chet Edwards.

The second award named in McCall's honor is the Abner V. McCall Humanitarian Award. This award recognizes individuals who, like him, have demonstrated a Christian response to the situations and persons around them. Recipients of the award mirror McCall's way of facing situations and people around him. The first recipient, Roberta Keys Torn, was honored for beginning a volunteer program to assist the families of cancer patients in Houston. Other humanitarian award winners have also contributed to their community while portraying a Christian standard of living. Individuals selected for this celebrated honor carry on McCall's distinguished legend and gracious spirit.
