Homecoming

by Megan Duron

I wish I could say I consider myself full of school spirit, but the truth is I’d only been to one game before homecoming weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I love the idea of supporting your university, but it’s easier said than done.

However, since this was my last homecoming and I had never experienced a full-on homecoming weekend before, my friends and I decided to go to as many events as we could. Although we wanted to go to the bonfire, Friday night ended up being cold and we decided to skip the festivities that night and start fresh on Saturday morning with the parade.

In an effort to prepare ourselves for the festivities of the day, my friends and I decided to make a hearty breakfast before the parade began. So at seven in the morning we all gathered in my friend’s kitchen and made eggs, pancakes, bacon, and orange juice. Fully energized, the five of us walked to fifth street around eight a.m. to get a good spot and wait for the longest collegiate parade in the nation to make its way onto campus.

Around 8:30, the beginning of the parade peaked around the corner of fifth street. We watched as the floats that had required hours upon hours of labor finally got their glory. It was fun to see all the themes and decorations used for each individual float. Finally, after about an hour’s time, the end of the parade approached and it was off to homecoming activity number two: the homecoming game.

While the game began at eleven, we didn’t get in until the second quarter due to the crazy amount of people at the game and the ticket line. Once we’d finally gotten our tickets, my friends and I made our way to student seating. Although we were losing, I was surprised at how encouraged and enthused the crowd seemed. The seats were absolutely packed and it seemed like every Baylor student was in attendance. The game ended up being a blast and the weather was incredible. Even though we did lose, the experience was great.

After the game my friends and I continued our school spirit by attending a club rugby game that another of my friends was playing in. Although the Rugby game was not necessarily a homecoming event, it was still fun to be supportive of something Baylor. Our rugby team beat TCU, and while I had no real knowledge of what was happening in the game, it still proved to be a great time.

I’m not saying I plan to attend everything I can related to Baylor after last weekend, but I would like to start going to more games my final year and support the things my friends do for the school. After all, you only have one college undergraduate experience and I will forever be a Baylor Bear, so I need to make the most of it while I still have the chance. Hopefully once I graduate I will still be able to come down for homecoming weekends and support my alma mater.
